Music And Other Stories X IndustryMe: Top Grime artists of 2017

Today on the blog we have a guest post from a great friend of mine Antonia of Music and Other Stories.

Antonia is an aspiring music journalist living in South East London. Born and bred in Germany, she soon got bored of the music scene over there and quickly found inspiration in the London’s music scene.

Music & Other Stories was set up late 2016 because Antonia wanted to express her thoughts about music somewhere, and promote emerging and unknown talent

Without further ado here is her post on her top 3 grime artists of 2017.

Ryan De La Cruz

East London-based artist Ryan De La Cruz has made major waves this year. From performing at the emerging music festival The Great Escape in Brighton to releasing new singles off his recent project Pagans which was released last year – the rapper with the Congolese roots is not going anywhere. Drawing inspiration from the likes of Frank Ocean or Michael Jackson, Ryan has been into music his whole life, starting at church choir when he was young. His DIY mentality definitely turns De La Cruz into „one to watch“ for me.

J HUS

If you haven’t been living under a rock this year, then you probably heard of J Hus and his absolutely catchy tracks such as Did You See. Mixing afrobeats with his very own sound, the artist brought a whole new sound to the scene, and started getting his deserved attention after he dropped Dem Boy Paigon back in 2015. This year finally saw the release of his debut album Common Sense, a project which showcases the Londoner’s musical abiltites and led to a sold out show! Keep an eye on this one!

Little Simz

What some people might not know, is that Simbiatu Ajikawo aka London based rapper Little Simz has already dropped a fair amount of mixtapes and EP‘s in the past before finally releasing her debut album A Curious Tale of Trials + Persons back and the follow-up Stillness in Wonderland via her very own label Age 101. Latter even saw a whole event focused on the wonderland exhibtion at the Roundhouse in Camden, with many guest performances such as Mick Jenkins. Simz is among the UK artists who have established a solid fanbase across the pond and frequently tours in the USA and Europe. I am looking forward to hearing more of her music in the future!
